Congratulations to ICMP MMus Masters in Music Performance tutor Michael Hyman on the success of his compositions for new opera, 'Ganga'

The piece has been performed at the National Opera Studio and at the Royal Academy of Dance with funding from Arts Council England.

'Ganga' is ‘a saga of heartbreak, promises and love’ where the eponymous character of Ganga embarks on an epic journey. The story is based on the legends of 'Mahabharata' by Vyasa.

Commenting, Michael said: "It is the Indian story of 'Ganga' which is at the very start of the 'Mahabharata', the Sanskrit epic. Think of 'The Odyssey' meets 'The Bible'!"

It's the first opera where the narrative is completely in Sanskrit and I worked with melodic composer Jataneel Banerjee to turn them into operatic works, orchestrated and harmonised for chorus."

The performances have featured five singers, four musicians and a choir of temple priests and there are plans for the production to be taken on tour in 2024.

'Ganga' was presented as a work-in-progress at the Tete-a-Tete Opera Festival 2022 and you can watch footage from an unstaged performance below.
