Find out how to improve your performance skills with ICMP tutors and much in-demand musicians and performers Tolis Zavaliaris and Jon Harris

What to expect from the event

This online session, run by guitar tutor Tolis Zavaliaris and drum tutor Jon Harris, will introduce you to how we approach music performance at ICMP.  You'll pick up some great insight and advice around stagecraft, musicality and what to expect from our BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance degree and HNC Music Performance course

You’ll have the opportunity to either watch a live performance via JamKazam by our tutors, with added Q&A session, or perform by submitting your song recording in advance and having our tutor team provide feedback.

Meet Tolis Zavaliaris and Jon Harris

Tolis is a much-respected ICMP alumnus and guitar tutor. His style incorporates influences and inspirations from his native Greece with his rock and jazz styles. He's a regular contributor to publications such as Guitar Techniques Magazine and All Out Guitar while releasing numerous solo albums. He's also played with the likes of Vanessa Mae and Anne Savege.

Alongside his teaching at ICMP, Jon is one of London's hardest working session drummers. As a live performer, he's played with some of the UK's most well-loved acts including funk outfit Odyssey and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Watch Jon's video on how to be a session drummer.

Our next online taster session will take place via Zoom on Tuesday 23rd February (5pm–6pm).

After you book your place, we'll send you an exclusive Zoom link so you can join us to find out more about this course.

OPTIONAL: Before the event...

During the first year of the BMus course, you will cover six major styles in your live performance classes, these are Blues, Soul, Rock, Funk, Reggae and Disco.

To get live feedback during this session, please record yourself playing or singing to a song of your choice, from one of these styles. You could simply record a verse and a chorus or the whole song - it's up to you!

Please note that this is optional and you are still welcome to attend the Course Taster Session if have not recorded yourself.

Here are some examples from each style:

  • Blues | ‘Boom Boom’  | John Lee Hooker
  • Soul | ‘Let’s Stay Together’  | Al Green
  • Rock | ‘You Give Love A Bad Name’  | Bon Jovi
  • Funk | ‘I Feel Good’  | James Brown
  • Reggae | ‘Could You Be Loved’  | Bob Marley
  • Disco | ‘Everybody Dance’ | Chic

We will also be looking through live performances by some of the greats and answering any questions you have.

See you there!
