Joe Clegg | ICMP masterclass

We were delighted to welcome music director and drumming ace Joe Clegg for an exclusive masterclass last night (23rd January).

As a musical director and touring session drummer, Joe has extensive experience playing some of the world’s biggest stages with the likes of chart topping stars Ellie Goulding, Years & Years and Clean Bandit (who include our drums alumna Luke Patterson and have just been nominated for two BRITs).

Joe's masterclass was another busy session full of students and alumni eager to learn from his experiences as mastermind behind some seriously impressive stage shows.

Using Ableton Live, he demonstrated how the platform helps him trigger samples, keyboard sounds and loops to give his stadium gigs an epic edge.

Commenting on the importance of music education, he said:

I think there is absolutely a role for a music school in 2018 to be teaching students about technique, how to be the best that they can be, discipline. Now there is a broader skill set that is required for young musicians wanting to get into the world of work."

On how drummers need to adapt for the needs of the modern music world, Joe said:

Learning to be a great drummer is important if that is what you want to do but remember that should go hand in hand with learning technology. Learning how to make your own music, how to record yourself, how to dissect a song you hear on a record and understand sonically what those sounds are and where they come from."

Look out for a video interview with Joe from the event.

His session follows our recent class with backing vocalists and artists in their own right LaSharVu. Our next session will be 6th February with ICMP drums tutor /about-icmp/tutors/jon-harrisJon Harris exploring what it takes to be a live and studio session player.
