Walking, running, or cycling are some of the most sustainable ways to travel around London, and a great way to stay healthy and active. In London, it is estimated that 42% of the adult population is failing to get enough physical activity each week to maintain their health.
London also has increasing numbers of private cars in use, and therefore using public transport combined with walking or cycling is a great way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to help a city that is keen to reduce the volume of cars on it's roads.
Planning to walk?
There are lots of apps that you can use on your phone to plan your journey. Two easy options are:
- On your mobile phone, you have access to Google Maps. Here you can plan all parts of the journey, not just the walk.
- You can also plan your route in advance through the Travel for London website.
For bus-specific details and timings, try the ‘bus checker’ app and for the London Underground try the ‘tube’ app.
Wear appropriate clothes and shoes. If you have to, carry your ‘day shoes’ but walk in a comfy pair of shoes. Also, make sure to check the weather in advance; do you need to carry an umbrella, or perhaps some suncream!
Living in London, a global metropolis requires all of us to be ‘street aware’ as we move through the city whether we are on a bus tube or walking. Here are some pointers for keeping safe during your travel through the capital:
- Only use taxis or registered minicabs.
- Try to avoid walking alone at night.
- Keep to well-lit main roads.
- Beware of wearing headphones – they reduce awareness of your surroundings.
- In the UK, cars drive on the left. To ensure you cross roads safely, only use designated crossings, only cross when the green man is showing and take note of the signs indicating "look right" or "look left" to spot any oncoming traffic.
