ICMP students from our BA Creative Music Production Programme were invited to spend three days at the legendary Konk Studios.

Konk is one of London’s most iconic independent recording studios having been originally set up by Ray and Dave Davies from the Kinks in the seventies. Its client list includes the likes of Depeche Mode, Arctic Monkeys and Bombay Bicycle Club.

The trip, led by Programme Leader James Rees, saw final year ICMP students experiencing a typical day in the studio for working musicians with ICMP tutor Charlie Thomas

Commenting, James said: "Charlie did a great job of organising musicians to record, and so the students were able to see lots of different areas of studio production, including writing, back line recording, vocal recording and some on the fly mixing.

We were very lucky to have James TW come and write a song on the Wednesday. By Friday, Charlie and his team had fleshed out a full recording, the whole process of which our students got to see."

UK singer songwriter James TW has over 800 million streams to his name, this visit offered our students an enviable opportunity to work with an established artist at this point in their own careers. Other artists to participate included That Girl Loren and Eloise Viola

Students participated in the sessions by helping to set up and pack away Konk’s great vintage microphone collection. The engineer also helped show them the signal path so students had the opportunity to patch on the huge old school patch bay.

James added: "It was great our students got to visit such an iconic studio, all of the gear there is totally original and vintage.

It was fantastic for our students to receive some industry connectivity in their final year, and this felt like a real celebration for students completing their degrees."
