ICMP’s Head of Songwriting Sophie Daniels has helped organise the UK launch of Song Suffragettes, a groundbreaking all-female country songwriter showcase from Nashville.

Well known in the US as a platform for emerging songwriting talent, Song Suffragettes will be landing in the UK with a new monthly night at The Camden Club in London following a sold-out London gig at Bush Hall.

Taking place on 2nd November, the first event will see ICMP Masters in Songwriting alumna and tutor Hannah Rose Platt perform alongside Vic Allen, Peri Rae, Beth Keeping and US artist Jordyn Mallory.

A team of ICMP interns studying ICMP’s BA in Live Event Management will work on the events while students will have other opportunities to get involved.

Sophie has been working with Song Suffragettes since she attended an event hosted by the organisation in Nashville in 2015.

Commenting, Sophie said:

I’m a huge advocate for gender equality within the music industry and I believe Song Suffragettes has a great role to play in increasing conversations around this issue."

"At present, only 14 percent of professional songwriters in the UK are women, a figure that we must urgently work to improve. My role with Song Suffragettes is to help their nights become established in the UK and to promote women in music and exceptional songcraft - two things that ICMP’s Songwriting Faculty stands for, particularly as our programmes have a 50/50 gender split."

Todd Cassetty, Song Suffragettes founder, said: "We’ve been wanting to expand Song Suffragettes for a while, but wanted it to matter when we did. Over the eight years of Song Suffragettes in Nashville, there has always been great interest in our singer-songwriters from all over the UK."

Previously, ICMP’s Masters in Songwriting and BA in Songwriting students have played this prestigious event in Nashville.

Song Suffragettes will be taking place at the Camden Club on the first Wednesday of every month.
