ICMP MA in Songwriting student Leoni Kennedy performed with the Anchoress as support act and as part of her backing band at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The Anchoress, also known as Catherine Anne Davies, ICMP songwriting tutor, has been Leoni’s 1:1 tutor during her time studying on the MA.

It was through this connection and shared musical interests that Leoni landed the opportunity to open the gig for Catherine, then perform with in her band.

Commenting, Leoni said: "The Anchoress, Catherine Anne Davies, was my 1:1 tutor on the MA course and we did frequently speak about the similarities in our music tastes."

I listened to her original music and social media, then I saw that she was doing a tour and I simply emailed her asking if she needed a support act."

"I didn’t hear anything back from her until three months later, when I was on my way to do a show in Blackpool."

I received a call from Catherine explaining that her guitarist had dropped out and she wondered if I could support the set as an acoustic opening act and then jump on electric guitar duties for the main set. The answer was of course … yes!"

“I had possibly a week or two that I really dedicated to learning the set and perfecting tones/sounds."

"It was hard work and we had three straight days of rehearsals, with an hour journey to and from the studio, plus learning new songs during the rehearsals too. Wanting to impress and do a good job, I got it done."

This was my first experience of touring and, as tough as it was both physically and mentally, it was incredible and worth every drop of sweat."

"We can’t wait to get back on the road for the autumn dates! Catherine is a legend and the rest of the band and tour manager have been spectacular to work with."

Look out for our interview with Leoni on her solo projects and time at ICMP.

The Anchoress' latest album, 'The Art of Losing', has been critically acclaimed and follows an array of projects including a collaborative record with Bernard Butler and touring with rock icons Simple Minds.

The Anchoress will be out on tour later in 2023. Check out the dates below:
