Major record label BMG is sponsoring a module on ICMP’s BA Music Business & Entrepreneurship Programme to celebrate and champion black music and artists.

The module is dedicated to exploring the history of today’s music business and will focus on the work of black artists and labels as part of BMG’s recent commitments to diversity and equality following the Black Lives Matter protests earlier this year.

Students will explore key developments in the evolution of pop music since the 1940s, their cultural context and impact alongside how these changes have shaped the music industry.

BMG Vice-President and ICMP tutor Ian Ramage will deliver the module as part of his work for the label.

Commenting, Ian Ramage, said: “I’m delighted to be delivering this module to ICMP students on behalf of BMG.

We’ll be exploring the vital importance of black music culture in pushing contemporary pop forward and analysing how issues around race and cultural identity have led to some of music’s most defining moments.”

Ken Foreman, ICMP's Associate Dean and BA Music Business & Entrepreneurship Programme Leader, said:

“The module has been fine-tuned by Ian to highlight and emphasise the impact of black music on the music industry and popular music. It’s a great initiative and the first sessions have proved to be very popular with our students.”

The module will look at jazz, gospel and blues to the birth of hip hop and how rap and grime dominates today’s pop music landscape alongside various topics related to the evolution of today's industry.
