Pete Whittard

Pete is a co-founder of ICMP and an experienced senior leader in Higher Education, a professional musician and company director with over 20 years’ experience. He is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has been part of the core team that has seen ICMP grow significantly in recent years. 

Pete was instrumental in conceiving, validating and developing ICMP’s portfolio, faculty and estates strategy and in identifying, building and maintaining key external partnerships with a number of academic partners (University of East London, University of South Wales, College of North West London, Middlesex University, EDI, OCN and Pearson). He is a qualified PRINCE 2 Project Manager and has led a wide range of projects at ICMP, from implementing software systems to numerous estates developments, including our current ambitious plans to develop Queens Park 

Prior to this leadership and management role, Pete was a professional musician for over 20 years. His first degree was a BSc Physics from York University and he gained a BA in Music Performance from Brunel University, and subsequently a PG Cert in Performance, from the University of West London. 

He was self-employed from 1986 to 2005, working as a guitarist, composer, author, journalist and teacher/lecturer, performing as a contemporary guitarist (over 3,000 live performances throughout the world) including headline shows at the Royal Albert Hall and numerous primetime TV shows (Terry Wogan, Punt and Denis) and radio shows (BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2), composer of commercial music (Audi, Ford, Holland and Barratt), author of books (Muse) and journalist for specialist guitar press (Guitar Techniques, Total Guitar). 

He became ICMP School Director/Head of School (2003-2007), with principal reasonability for the education department, but as part of the small senior management team contributed to all aspects of the business; he was ICMP Managing Director (2007-2008), overseeing the principal strategic and operational leadership of the institution; as ICMP Operations Director (2008-2015), with responsibility for strategic leadership and management across Academic and Facilities departments; and as ICMP Business Development Director (2015 – present), developing significant projects for ICMP, contributing to the development and delivery of ICMPs international strategy, and overseeing strategic and operational leadership and management of various functions including facilities, programme administration and Technology Enhanced Learning departments, and working as part of the senior management team.  

Pete’s significant recent innovations and projects include management of significant investment in and improvement of ICMP’s estates .​

Pete’s key strengths include senior level strategic/operational management; effective leadership; innovation and change management; planning and managing projects; partnership development; and communication and interpersonal skills. He is a keen tennis player, a classic car enthusiast and enjoys painting, while continuing to be passionate about playing the guitar, music and education. He continues to compose and perform and also teaches though ICMP Online and as a guest tutor at residential camps, getting immense pleasure from witnessing the transformative power of education.
