ICMP is delighted to be once again partnering with the Song Academy and sponsoring its Young Songwriter 2021 competition.

The contest is an initiative ICMP has been proud of supporting over the years and underlines our commitment to encouraging the next generation to explore the art of songwriting.

According to organisers, the competition is open to anyone aged between eight and eighteen years old with participants judged on lyrics, melody, instrumentation and more.

Preliminary rounds will be judged by many of ICMP’s MA Songwriting students. 11 students will form a judging panel to select the top 30, then top 10 songwriters for the other judges to consider from more than 700 entries. ICMP student EvaPerrin Fontana has been chosen as the head judge from the ICMP students.

Stars such as Tom Odell, Midge Ure, Miranda Cooper and ICMP alumnus Fraser T Smith and tutor Sophie Daniels are among the judges too.

Fraser told the Song Academy: “With so much going on in the world, it’s never been more vital for young people to be able to channel their energy and emotions into something positive, which is what the Young Songwriter competition encourages and facilitates through songwriting.

Every young person has something to say, a story to tell, or a message to share – that’s why Song Academy is so important to our community.”

ICMP will also be contributing a prize in the form of a studio session. Winners will be provided with the opportunity to record with Creative Music Production tutor, Paul Stanborough

Paul said:

As a tutor at ICMP, an essential part of our work is to nurture the success stories of tomorrow. I’m very pleased I can extend this kind of support and work with the great talent showcased by the Song Academy.”

Entries for this year's competition close on 31 March.
