Congratulations to ICMP tutor Audrey Riley for contributing a chapter to a new book exploring the work, life and career of composer Gavin Bryars.

Gavin is revered as one of the most important post-minimalist composers in the UK and the book - titled 'Gavin Bryars' - has been published to mark his 80th birthday.

Audrey's chapter, 'The Flower of Friendship – The Gavin Bryars Ensemble', is featured alongside contributions from musicians, colleagues, and collaborators who have worked with him over the course of his career.

Audrey, a composer, cellist, arranger, and conductor with close to 200 album credits to her name, has often performed with Gavin as part of The Gavin Bryars Ensemble.

Commenting, Audrey said: "I've been very fortunate to play for and with Gavin Bryars for a long time, and had a magical year in 2023 helping to celebrate his 80th birthday."

It was an honour to have been invited to contribute a chapter to this book. Insights from performers and colleagues who've worked with Gavin give a glimpse of the working practice that drives the composer behind some of the most important and profound contemporary music."

"I was thrilled to be asked to give a 'view from my chair'."

Gavin Bryars has worked in classical music, jazz, free improvisation, minimalism, historicism, avant-garde, and experimental music. His style has continuously evolved since his first piece in 1969, 'The Sinking of the Titanic'.

Tony Harris, ICMP's Principal, said: "Audrey was the first tutor I met when I started at ICMP in 2016. I was immediately in awe of her association with Gavin Bryars who was a huge influence on my own musical development."

Audrey's experience playing his music, and bringing that experience directly into the classroom is exactly what makes ICMP such an inspiring place for the next generation."

"I'm delighted she has been able to contribute to an important book on this iconic composer. I urge all students to read this and check out Bryars' catalogue if you haven't already!”
