Jason Bavanandan | Songwriting Tutor | ICMP London

Jason Bavanandan is a songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist with nearly 20 years of experience working with major recording and publishing labels. He is also the recipient of the highest diplomas from Victoria College of Music.

Though he has been playing music since he was seven years old, Jason began his professional career while still at university. As the singer and songwriter in the band Battle, he was scouted and signed by independent label maverick Simon Williams of Fierce Panda (Coldplay, Keane). He was then signed to Warner Records by Korda Marshall (Muse, Alt-J, Ash) and to EMI Publishing by Guy Moot and Mike Smith.

Battle released two albums, enjoyed huge chart success, and recorded live sessions for national radio. They toured internationally and performed at many of the UK’s biggest festivals, including Reading and Leeds, T in the Park, Latitude, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and Wireless.

Following Battle, Jason continued his songwriting career by signing to Universal Music, and then Sony/ATV, the world’s largest publishing company. His 2015 album-movie, 'Whiplash Dreams', became ‘the first cinematically-released album in history’. The film took five years to make and, like the album, charts the dissolution of a couple’s relationship over twelve months in twelve songs. It was acclaimed at the Berlin Film Festival when it was showcased, and it trailblazed the ambitious and new transmedia form of delivery for other artists. The album itself was composed, performed, orchestrally scored, and produced entirely by Jason.

Jason now operates from his own studio, working with select artists. His studio leadership is the product of the dedicated mentoring he received from Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence and the Machine), Danton Supple (Coldplay), Ben Hiller (U2, Blur), Dave McCracken (Alicia Keys, Ian Brown), Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode), and Hugo Nicolson (Primal Scream). He remains committed to nurturing new talent and works internationally with emerging artists to ensure they develop an empowered and idiosyncratic voice.
