Institute orchestra playing live music

The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance’s Orchestra – We Are Children (We Make Sound) – will launch its debut album with a performance at St. Pancras Church on Sunday 16th February 2014. The album ‘June 12’, which includes the single ‘Gaved’ was recorded in the summer of 2012 and is now being released on AR Records and available online and through Rough Trade stores, with a launch show promoted by Arctic Sound.

The orchestra is a mixed ensemble project, formed in 2011, with students from all years and courses at the Institute. It describes itself as “more contemporary music ensemble than band, more rock than orchestra” with a musical style that lies in “the nether-land that exists between rock, experimental and contemporary music.”

Guided by cellist and arranger Audrey Riley (who has worked with artists including Muse and Coldplay) and led by bassist Dan Gaylard and guitarist Alastair Beveridge, the group has always had one intention: to explore music, regardless of which instruments turned up, or whatever style was suggested.  With an unusual line-up comprising of seven guitars, two basses, a mandolin, drums and percussion, a flute, a clarinet, strings, pianos, keyboards and vocals, their Dubstep remixing enables them to produce minimal masterpieces which areself-penned compositions and arrangements of well-known works.

Audrey Riley commented: “The band has had a great time over the past couple of years working on this repertoire and developing as an ensemble. We'll be playing the entire album which includes ‘Electric Counterpoint (Reich)’, ‘Tubular Bells’, as well as old favourites. We're already working on new material and the concert will hint at some of that.”
The ensemble debuted live in the Black Lion pub, Kilburn in 2011 and moved on to performances in the foyers of Kings Place and The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank, before being invited by Ben Eshmade (Daylight Music/Arctic Circle) to headline at the Union Chapel.

The orchestra’s exploration continues, with more music being written and recorded, and plans to work with the composer Gavin Brayrs on a major project later in 2014.
