Following his judging of our Shure Songwriting Award last year, Frank Turner will be coming to the Institute to talk about his career, songwriting, performing and anything else you would like to ask him about (including Iron Maiden*), as well as playing us a few songs. This masterclass should appeal not only to songwriters, but anyone wanting to hear from a truly successful artist, who has built up a following both in a band and solo context in two very different genres.
Since the demise of Million Dead, the hardcore quartet he fronted, Frank has been on a constant upward curve. His fourth album, 2011’s England Keep My Bones, sold more than 100,000 copies and entered the UK Charts at number 12. Its follow-up, last year’s Tape Deck Heart ushered in a new level of success. It entered the UK Charts at Number 2 and the iTunes Charts at Number 1 and has sold 200,000 copies so far. With this release, everything on a ‘Successful Album Campaign’ checklist has been struck: a high billing on the main stage at the Reading and Leeds festivals, the Radio 1 A-List, the Radio 1 Live Lounge, a sold-out UK arena tour and he even won Celebrity Mastermind, with *Iron Maiden as his specialist subject.
