Elena Tonra | Daughter | Songwriters Circle | Institute of Contemporary Music Performance

We're very proud and excited to be welcoming back ICMP Songwriting Alumna and good friend, Elena Tonra (Daughter), for our final Songwriters' Circle event of this Academic Year.

The Songwriters’ Circle is a monthly event led by ICMP’s highly-experienced songwriting teachers and music industry professionals. Open to all, the event attracts writers, musicians, music lovers and music industry executives, encouraging a unique and diverse blend of people to come together to discuss and enjoy quality songwriting.

Staged in an intimate setting, the audience gets an exclusive opportunity to hear songs in their most stripped-back form, with the songwriters themselves sharing personal insights into how the songs have been created.

Elena Tonra formed Daughter whilst studying at ICMP

Special guest Elena formed her band Daughter with fellow ICMP Alumni Igor Haefeli, (who also studied Songwriting) and Remi Aguilella, (who studied a BMus in Popular Music Performance as a drummer), and some of her best loved songs, including ‘Youth’, were actually started at ICMP, in workshop sessions.

Elena has an exceptional and unique voice as a songwriter and the band’s work has gone on to receive great critical acclaim and commercial success, having in turn a strong influence on a whole new generation of alternative folk female songwriter’s. The trio’s writing and arrangements, along with Igor’s innovative production, created an inspiring and innovative new sound who’s influence can now be heard across modern, electronic folk. Eight years on from their graduation, it is a pleasure and an honour for us  to look back on their success and host this special event with Elena.

I can’t wait to hear her play some of those songs for us again in their stripped back raw form, and hear her brand new material, at the lovely and atmospheric venue Rosslyn Hill Chapel. It should be a very special evening for our whole songwriting community.”
Sophie Daniels, Head of Songwriting at ICMP

Introducing ARK

Here at ICMP, we’re very proud of our legacy of graduating independent and authentic songwriting artists and, in-keeping with that theme, alongside Elena the event will also feature new artist and fellow ICMP Alumna ARK. Charlotte Clark, aka ARK, has recently released her first single which has already gone on to achieve over 1 million streams on Spotify. Charlotte creates beautiful and unique songs and we’re, again, proud of her work and excited for her bright and independent future.

The Songwriters’ Circle event will be hosted by Sophie Daniels and will also feature three of ICMP’s current songwriting students - Cristina Llull (Year 2), Akira Kikucha (Year 2)and Sergei Vartiainen (Year 1) - who are all working hard to develop their own unique voices.
