We're thrilled to welcome Sarathy Korwar to ICMP, one of the most original and compelling voices in the UK music scene.

Born in the US, Sarathy Korwar, was growing up in Ahmedabad and Chennai in India. At the age of 10 he began playing the tabla before translating his skills to the western drum kit and playing as a session musician. Sarathy moved to London to study Tabla at SOAS, focusing on the adaptation of Indian classical rhythmic material to non-Indian percussive instruments.

Since then he's established himself as one of the most original and compelling voices in the UK jazz scene. Sarathy worked with artists and musicians such as Kamasi Washington, Yussef Kamaal, Moses Boyd or Shabaka Hutchings.

In 2016, he released his debut album 'Day To Day' before recording the critically-acclaimed live album Sarathy Korwar and UPAJ Collective. My East is your West blending London's new jazz talent with Indian classical instrumentation. The live album was awarded The Guardians 'Contemporary Album of the Month'.

Kawar released his second studio album 'More Arriving' through The Leaf Label in July 2019. The album is an honest reflection of his experience of being an Indian in Britain and incorporates rappers from Mumbai and Delhi, spoken word and his own Indian classical and jazz performances. More Arriving was voted MOJO magazines Jazz Album of the Year.

This event is part of our EQ series (started earlier this year), where we have been discussing equality and diversity within the music industry. Sarathy will be talking about being an artist from an Asian background and how this has influenced his music.
