Each Freshers Week, we invite in a notable guest from the music industry to share their experiences and wisdom with our incoming students.

This year we are inviting Yolanda Charles, who is a musician and teacher as well as an industry legend.

UK Bassist Yolanda Charles has been working as a session musician since 1990 starting her career playing for Jimmy Sommerville, Aztec Camera and Paul Weller. During a career spanning the next 30 years work with an eclectic mix of artists followed including, Robbie Williams, BB King, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Van Morrison, Mick Jagger, Anastasia, Sinead O’Connor, Daryl Hall, Musical Director for the Eurythmic’s Dave Stewart and TV houseband work with Jonathan Ross, Ricky Wilson (Kaiser Chiefs) & Nicole Scherzinger (Pussy Cat Dolls). Yolanda’s more recent work includes performing with composer Hans Zimmer beginning in 2014 with European & world tours in the following years to date. She has also worked on various film soundtracks including “A Knight’s Tale” “Alfie” “Home” “War on Everyone” “Boss Baby” I & II and most recently Dune.

In 2017 she recorded an album with British band Squeeze, “The Knowledge” touring in the UK and US throughout 2017 - 2019 In 2020 Yolanda was a recipient of an MBE (Member Of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire) - for services to music. Her current work includes writing and performing as leader of funk/RnB band - PROJECT PH. She runs a mentoring and music business consultancy, whilst continuing the usual live and recording session work. She has worked with young people at colleges and universities, lecturing and presenting workshops to encourage solid growth in musicianship and performance development.”
