We are excited to announce that the next ICMP Careers Day will take place on Wednesday 14th October at the Institute.

We have a number of top-level guests who’ll be taking part in Q&A panels and workshops where they’ll be talking about their experiences in the industry and imparting their advice on how to build your career as a musician/performer, or on the business side of the music industry.

It will also be a great opportunity to network and to make contacts with artist managers, independent and major record labels, social media gurus, marketing managers, music publishers, booking agents and live promoters. All events will take place at the Institute except the Keynote Speech, which will take place at the Tricycle Theatre. 

 

1pm - Keynote Speech by ‘Example’ at The Tricycle Theatre

 

Elliot Gleave aka ‘Example’ will be discussing various aspects of his career as a musician, creative and business person covering subjects including:

 

-              Connection with industry

-              Portfolio skillset

-              Challenges & successes of the music industry

-              Musicians as entrepreneurs

-              Staying well physically and mentally

 

Example first found success with the release of his second studio album, Won't Go Quietly, which peaked at number 4 on the UK Albums Chart and peaked at number 1 on the UK Dance Chart. The album had two top 10 singles, "Won't Go Quietly" and "Kickstarts".  His third album ‘Playing in the Shadows’ was released on 4 September 2011, topping the charts with two number 1 singles, "Changed the Way You Kiss Me" and "Stay Awake".  His fourth album, The Evolution of Man was released on 19 November 2012 and peaked at number 1 on the UK Dance Chart, and his fifth album, 'Live Life Living' was released in 2014 also debuted at number 1 in the UK Dance Chart.

2.15pm - Live Panel & Q&A

 

This will include advice on everything you need to know about touring and playing live, including how to get better gigs, how to get a booking agent and how to build a career in the live side of the music industry.

Panellists:

Simon Jones – Vice President of Live Music, AEG Live

Simon works with Ed Sheeran, London Grammar, John Newman, Emili Sande and many more.

Phyllis Belezos – Booking Agent, ITB

With a roster of acts 27 strong, Phyllis has fantastic experience in the live booking sector. Her roster includes; Bernhoft, Beverly Knight, Jake Isaac, Karima Francis, Lucy Rose and Vintage Trouble to name a few.

Paul Bolton – Booking Agent, XRay Touring

Paul has represented a diverse selection of acts including Kaiser Chiefs, Apocalyptica, Within Temptation, Groove Armada, Dido, Faithless and The Kelly Family.

 

3.15pm - Artist Management/Record Label Panel & Q&A

 

This will be a discussion about the roles of Artist Managers and Record Labels, including how to get signed, what they’re looking for in an artist, and how to forge a career at a label or management company.

Panellists:

Mike Smith – Vice President of A&R at Virgin/EMI Records

Mike currently works with The Libertines, Iggy Azalea, The Chemical Brothers and The Vamps.  In the past his roster has included Kings of Leon, Kasabian, PJ Harvey, The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, Calvin Harris, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

Diane Wagg – Owner of Deluxxe Management and Ideal Music Productions and Co-Chair of the Music Managers Forum

Diane’s roster has included Scouting For Girls, Republica and Beth Orton.

Toby L – Co-founder of Transgressive Records

Transgressive is one of the UK’s biggest independent labels and home to Foals, Pulled Apart By Horses, Two Door Cinema Club and Regina Spektor.  Voted Label of the Year at the AIM Independent Music Awards 2015.

 

4.15pm - Alumni Panel & Q&A

 

Hear from, and discuss with, previous students of the Institute who have gone on to develop rapidly growing, dynamic professional careers. The panel will be made up of instrumentalists and music industry representatives.

Panellists:

Louise Bartle – Drummer of Bloc Party and various session performances

Louise has worked hard to establish herself as a professional drummer, appearing on the E4 show ‘Skins’ as a drummer in her early career development and moving forward to be confirmed recently as the new drummer in Bloc Party.  Last month Louise performed on the Radio One Live Lounge with Selena Gomez.

Cherie Jones – Artist aka ‘Jones’

Cherie studied vocals at the Institute and since has developed her sound, her writing, her artistry and built a team round her which has allowed her music to reach a growing fan-base, with huge Spotify streaming numbers and a recent appearance on Jools Holland!

Victoria Becks – Artist Manager, Tileyard

Victoria, after studying the BMus degree in Vocals, pursued a career in the music industry side of things and has most recently started working with Tileyard who manage Ella Eyre and Sigala amongst others. Victoria herself is looking after ‘Imani’, ‘HUMN’ &’ I.AM.L’

Nathan Albert - Musical Director/Keys Player/Guitarist/Producer

Nathan was always one of the busiest musicians during his time at the Institute and is now the Musical Director for Heshima Thompson (Amy Winehouse BVs), Musical Director for Zalon (Amy Winehouse BVs), playing keys for MNEK, producing with Skitz Beats having worked with Tempa T and Wiley and also has credits for TV Adverts with clients such as Puma, Powerade, Skoda, Bentley and the O2

 

5.15pm - How to build your Fanbase Panel & Q&A

Find out how to build your fanbase through social media, digital marketing and gigging.

Panellists:

Alex Waldron - Head of Marketing, Island Records
Island Records is currently home to Florence & The Machine, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Disclosure, Ben Howard, Dizee Rascal, Hozier, Jessie J and Mumford & Sons.  Previous artists include Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley and U2.

Lisa Ward - Label Manager, Fiction Records
Fiction Records is a subsidiary of Universal Music Group and its roster includes The Maccabees, Tame Impala, Crystal Castles, Kaiser Chiefs and Snow Patrol.

Ryan Walter – Owner, Interlude Artists

Ryan has done digital marketing campaigns for Beyonce, Britney Spears, P!nk, Olly Murs, The Script, Lauren Aquilina, Enrique Iglesias, Hurts, Chris Brown, One Republic, Imagine Dragons and Brandon Flowers.

Clare Britt – Owner, Plan A

Now running her own marketing consultancy, Clare has worked as Marketing Director at Island Records and Rough Trade Records, with acts including The Strokes, The Libertines, PJ Harvey, The Cribs, Charlotte Church, Pulp, McFly, DJ Fresh, Faithless and the magician Dynamo.

 

1pm – 6pm – One-To-One A&R Sessions

This is your chance to spend 20 minutes with an A&R representative from a variety of record labels and play your music for some feedback face-to-face. You can book your place by clicking the links below. Strictly one booking per student with ONE of the representatives below.

The representatives are:

Sam Denholm – A&R at Virgin/EMI

Virgin/EMI boast an impressive roster of artists including Bastille, Lorde, Emeli Sande, Jake Bugg, MNEK, Chase & Status and Ella Eyre to name a few. 

Tor Ree – A&R at Polydor

Tor is not only A&R at Polydor whose roster include artists such as Ellie Goulding, Aloe Blacc, Elbow, Eric Clapton, Hudson Taylor, Haim, James Blake and many others, she also runs one of the most respected nights in London for new music discovery; Gold Dust. 

Sam Tewari – A&R at Relentless Records

Relentless Records operates as an independent label under the large umbrella of Sony Music. Their roster includes artists such as Bondax, Misty Miller, Chris Malinchak, Mausi, Joey Bada$$ and Fono, and in the past they have had huge album sales with artists like Joss Stone, KT Tunstall and Cage The Elephant. Sam also looks after the writers in their publishing division. He was previously an agent at Coda, working on acts such as Imagine Dragons, Palma Violets, The Neighbourhood, Tom Vek, Jamie Woon. 

 

Please note that you only need to book to attend the Keynote Speech and the A&R 1-1 sessions.  For all of the other Panels and events, just turn up.
