We’re delighted that our BA Creative Musicianship alumnus Matthew Mason has been announced as the new drummer for the band HÆLOS.
Matthew worked closely with our team in the Careers and Industry Hub during his time with us and after he completed his studies. His connection with us goes back some way with Matt studying at one of our Summer Schools as well as undertaking work experience with our Facilities team.
Here’s what Matt had to say on getting the gig…
I first saw HÆLOS' advert for a drummer on ICMP’s James Brister’s Facebook profile. The team in the Hub often share details of their opportunities via their Facebook pages. I thought the music sounded perfect for me while the opportunity to tour in the US, Europe and Australia was also very appealing.
I contacted James with links to some performance videos on my Instagram and he forwarded them to the band’s management. I chose videos to showcase the styles the band were looking for, then later that day I was invited to audition.
I was asked to learn two of the band’s songs from their first album to play with them as well as listen and play along with a new song from their forthcoming record. It was quite a nervy 45 minutes in the room with the band knowing that I was being judged, but luckily, they’re really nice which made it a bit easier!"
I made sure I was as prepared as possible by practising and memorising the songs and also really listening to all the percussive details and sounds that the tracks included. I made sure my performances included all of them.
I was then invited to a call back where I had to learn six songs and run through them with two of the band members, Dom and Daniel. Again, I tried to make my performance stand out by using extra percussion and showing that I’d really thought about how to make my performances as dynamic and as interesting as possible while keeping the fundamental pulse at the heart of the songs.
It seemed to work, as after running through the second song they telepathically looked at each other and decided that they wanted me to be their drummer! Thanks again to ICMP, James Brister and The HUB for their continued support.
